    Atmospheric turbulence and superstatistics

Nonequilibrium systems with large-scale fluctuations of a suitable system parameter are often effectively described by a superposition of two statistics, a superstatistics. Here we illustrate this concept by analysing experimental data of fluctuations in atmospheric wind velocity differences at Florence airport.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. Possible Suppression of Resonant Signals for Split-UED by Mixing at the LHC?

The mixing of the imaginary parts of the transition amplitudes of nearby resonances via the breakdown of the Breit-Wigner approximation has been shown to lead to potentially large modifications in the signal rates for new physics at colliders. In the case of suppression, this effect may be significant enough to lead to some new physics signatures being initially missed in searches at, e.g., the LHC. Here we explore the influence of this `width mixing' on the production of the nearly degenerate, level-2 Kaluza-Klein (KK) neutral gauge bosons present in Split-UED. We demonstrate that in this particular case large cross section modifications in the resonance region are necessarily absent and explain why this is so based on the group theoretical structure of the SM.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures; discussion and references adde

Start-Up Costs in American Research Universities

    Get PDF
Our report briefly summarizes findings from the 2002 Cornell Higher Education Research Institute survey of start-up costs at the over 220 universities classified as Research and Doctoral universities by the Carnegie Foundation in 1994. It reports the mean start-up cost packages across institutions for new assistant professors and senior faculty, broken down by institutional type (public/private), Carnegie classification and field (biology, chemistry, engineering, physics and astronomy) and also discuses the sources of funding for start-up costs

Chaos in temperature in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model

We prove the existence of chaos in temperature in the Sherringhton-Kirkpatrick model. The effect is exceedingly small, namely of the ninth order in perturbation theory. The equations describing two systems at different temperatures constrained to have a fixed overlap are studied analytically and numerically, yielding information about the behaviour of the overlap distribution function PT1,T2(q)P_{T_1,T_2}(q) in finite-size systems.Comment: REVTEX, 6 pages, 2 figure

    Searching For Anomalous τνW\tau \nu W Couplings

The capability of current and future measurements at low and high energy e+e−e^+e^- colliders to probe for the existence of anomalous, CP conserving, τνW\tau \nu W dipole moment-type couplings is examined. At present, constraints on the universality of the tau charged and neutral current interactions as well as the shape of the τ→ℓ\tau \to \ell energy spectrum provide the strongest bounds on such anomalous couplings. The presence of these dipole moments are shown to influence, e.g., the extraction of αs(mτ2)\alpha_s(m_\tau^2) from τ\tau decays and can lead to apparent violations of CVC expectations.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure

Thermodynamics of an Evaporating Schwarzschild Black Hole in Noncommutative Space

    Get PDF
We investigate the effects of space noncommutativity and the generalized uncertainty principle on the thermodynamics of a radiating Schwarzschild black hole. We show that evaporation process is in such a way that black hole reaches to a maximum temperature before its final stage of evolution and then cools down to a nonsingular remnant with zero temperature and entropy. We compare our results with more reliable results of string theory. This comparison Shows that GUP and space noncommutativity are similar concepts at least from view point of black hole thermodynamics.Comment: 15 Pages, 2 Figures, revised and refernces adde
